Nightmare Visions
Once I thought I dreamt Of a cartography Of days yet to come in my life Where living corpses lined the streets And aged faces turned to stone. We took refuge underground, Served by priests In aquamarine chambers. Then I walked along a river Toward a tower looming Over valleys less formidable. I came to its apex alone A nest overlooking the folds Lined wall to wall With maps of the future. I say that I regret nothing Yet here is my ledger With an empty spot For my former self. You can have the body of the nightmare visionary. Drag him around the perimeter Or hang him in the square. I don’t care what you do.

Do demons haunt your company, Like sleeping in a bed of thorns? Maybe you belong there Bleeding out in some latrine. The wheel spins, doesn’t it? It spins, and yet here you are. Behold the glorious turnings of the wheel! Volumes unwritten And the Duce’s swollen corpse. March on, lost ones! Go on to your gallows, Along with your gods. Rot with your mirages Of horizons and dawns And take with you your treasures Of ages long gone. Die in the desert And leave not a bone. Don’t halt any longer When the past is your home.

Born for war, indeed! O misplaced warrior, You may take refuge here Atop a mountain of burning tires. A funeral game For an unnamed companion! The world never saw your strength Because you didn’t have any. Here is your cage, Little bird! The old world lives! Come see its iron bars And its self-appointed steward: The grotesque child Of a thousand imaginary swords.

Now see the inner workings of the world, Lost child of antiquity Mouthpiece of highest reality! Yes! Another would-be shaman Thrown into the spiritual desert Of our times. Your life is an intractable series of problems. I would like to solve it for you. I’ll hack apart your chest And fill it with bullets and concrete. O the striations and burdens Of ultimate reality! You deserve an honorable death, A death unburdened From unjust anonymity! The cosmos in ancient order! Rasputin’s mutilated corpse On a nameless highway.

Ah, the Magus has arrived To tell us how to think and what to say! O the sullen intricacies Of this and that - pay no mind! You and I, according to He, Are lower types. Blessed be the Magus, Who taught me the inner workings Of self-abuse! O the work! Behold my opus Under the auspices Of such an illustrious cast Of delusional, vile creatures. How fortunate am I To have fathered those volumes In utter derangement! Fuck you! You wouldn’t last a single day In a country that wasn’t A liberal democracy… How dare you call yourself a fascist! Fuck you!

Now comes the nightmare visionary, Awaiting an epitaph. He believes in something celestial, yes! Something primordial, Unseen and forgotten By the prying eyes Of our modernity. He talks of entire oceans Of nothing in particular. And for his daily bread An elaborate network of schemes and panaceas Designed to prop up the artificial columns Of his misery. Delusion finds company, Finds other nightmares. He wrote that Lightning came out of his fingertips Out of his spine. Everything was a living dream, Colored with the unshakeable feeling Of having lived it before.

One night I will dream of a cartography Of days past in my life Of immersion and silence When there was time, Always yet time. The future came and went, And so did I. Yet still I persist Smoldering in thirst and fear. And so I will burn these maps, For they are not my own. These dreams - they are not even my own. I will set fire to them And plunge headlong into today As if tomorrow it were my turn To hang with the lost Of days past.
