Siege
This was our nation These were our streets, stagnation Culture degrading Dissent so long silenced So long forgotten Hope lost to the decay of decades To a ruler crowned by his father Crowned by his father A leader once revered But his children's children Revelling in excess Ruling with fear reviled Impatient for change We took to the streets. Emboldened a great Chorus Of voices so long silenced So long forsworn Urged forth and provoked By the zeitgeist We rushed together In a flood to change the tide And unseat a tyrant crowned by his father And by his father To throw down the elite To raze the nepotic regime Revolution A city retaken Blood in the streets, devastation People scattered stumbled Blind by fear numb with shock Our audacious ascent So brutally silenced And all that was gained Was disastrously lost The frightened fled and The furious stood cast Stones and against steel Bones against lead They marked our stand With their blood Where violence is the rule The violent rise, insurrection Our righteous struggle Flags and bloodied Banners cast aside Clenched fists with Bruised knuckle rise Dissident soldiers turn their Weapons against the regime Positions fortified And arms smuggled to eager hands It is steel against steel And blood for blood it is war This is our nation These are our streets, defiance We are steadfast They have gathered their greatest Might against us But only in death will We ever be silenced The roads to retreat Are paved with mines The horizons watched By artillery lines The wings of warplanes Darken the skies Pushed back and cornered But we will hold fast We will outlast

Once this place lived and breathed Pulsing grids of roads like pumping arteries Feeding the city A city that sparkled with electric light Smoulders now dimly Through acrid smog In each direction graveyard roads That a touch explodes Scattered twisted metal Ripping in the heat haze The enemy waits on all sides Watches every exit Once proud once united We held this sacred ground for the love of Our nation But now we are scalpers And scroungers, hoarders and thieves We suspect and we steal and smuggle Precious scraps to the hungry mouths of Our dearest kin We see who eats well and we watch those Who are wasting Their bones exposed by shrunken skin But we keep what is ours Our pallid children draw in bright colours On shell cracked bullet riddled walls Our elders sleep long hours Swaddled like babes To warm cold aching limbs They plead with us to lay down our arms But with what we have commenced We must persist For even with our weapons laid down The innocent would burn This place still lives it still breathes Steady silent But for the scurry of rats The whimper of hungry dogs And the random tumble Of fractured masonry A burst of occasional gunfire The crack and rumble of falling shells Sometimes in the still moments The plaintive cry of a child The enemy waits on all sides And we watch And will never surrender

First the elderly were stricken And soon the infants grew weak And the sallow children keened and cried Clutching aching bellies It was the horror of war The upheaval we said Slowly crushing them The weight of constant fear Then they began to die And soon we felt in our blood In our bones Sickness Atrocity Our well had been poisoned contaminated With a noxious contagion Taken for granted our source of life Steel veins of vital water carried from afar From far beyond the borders of our strong world Vulnerable to the abominable ruthlessness of the tyrant His desperation manifest in his mounting cruelty Side by side and row on row Our comrades laid out In the ruined husks of houses No cloth to cover them No means to bury them Dishonourably felled In abject unjust suffering With our victory They will be yet honoured We watch the skies for the shadow of the enemy And we watch eager for the grey waves of rain We place our vessels in filthy streets Crowded with blackened rubble and rubbish To capture every drop from blast buckled gutters We cup our trembling, dirty hands And we drink deep the watter bitter with wrath Shrouded in the miasma licking our wounds As brazen rodents drawn to the stench Congregate and feast upon a miserable banquet This pestilence destroyer and creator For only our strongest have survived And enflamed our greatest will arise A phoenix spurred by vengeance We can only prevail

Glittering darkling night Waiting for the dawn Black infinite envision eternity Creatures of this dark vault Beasts in the flowing starstream Heroes, gods and charlatans Flee and fade before the gathering night The skyline cuts its way across the darkness Dividing heaven and earth Stirring the cauldron of night Soft light surrounds a somber horned moon Luna fades yet is never conquered The glow slowing rises across the vault Ever warned and brighter the aether grows Green flash at the horizon signals the ascent (A) limb of Sol appears as a shining apparition The tops of silent trees seem to flash into flame Shadows at first cast long across the earth Begin to shrink as soon as they are born Ascent of the flames commenced again
