Marco Polo: The Metal Soundtrack
It all began in the year of our Lord 1254 when Marco Polo was born in Venice, the proud republic, the Queen of the Adriatic Sea. Young Marco loved to listen to sailor's fabulous adventures about distant lands and dreamed about his father's return and about his own journey, which once became legendary. So Marco set sail from Venetian shores with his father and uncle. Their first steps led to Acre and Jerusalem and then further east through the war-torn land of Armenia and Persia.

I have crossed the restless seas Then passed Tabriz, Hormuz Places far beyond ... Hot wind, burning sand Oasis in the desert land We're still marching on In the footprints of the caravan Mongers or madmen On a quest to the unknown The vision of wealth and gold Leads us to distant shores (Bridge) Only God Rules the sky Only Khan * Bow to Khan Persian realm * You're no one (Chorus) Your kingdom reminds me a garden With iron grip you take a lead Would you let die, mighty Kublai The Desert rose that made your Greatness cry Your grandeur, oh mighty Khan Strokes our souls and fills our empty hearts ... Breathing heady scents Fine silks caress my hands Oh, this must be The true merchant's heaven Crescent above my head, Wise words of Mohammed Mourn abundant land That has become barren (repeat Bridge & Chorus) After wandering through desert plains, while seeing many things which Marco had never seen before, they finally reached the ancient town of Hormuz. Unfortunately, they faced the frightful invisible enemy there. The town was affected by the Black Death.

Walking through The valley of tears Dying land God-forsaken place Suffering, pictures I've never seen Fight 'till the last breath Turn the page It's time to change the plans Save our lives I have to leave my dreams Far behind Presence of mind Inner voice tells me: You have to go Don't hesitate If you wanna save your soul Horde of rats Beware of the silent threat Begging for mercy Release from pain and agony We're facing now new reality Silk road fame Our primal aim (Chorus) The sands of time Riding the wings of fantasy I never meant to die Wondering what fate will send to me Beyond the dark A bright tomorrow there's to see This is the only way to our destiny Buried alive Inside these rotting walls Ships in flames There is nowhere to go Escape through the desert From this hell You better run away Crying town Death's marching all around The stench of fear I smell in burning fire What is more? Water or gold? (repeat Chorus) The legend tells of Marco's short love affair which happened during these dark times...

From Hormuz they travelled for many weeks overland through the Silk Route and strange godforsaken places. At the roof of the world, while crossing the Pamir mountains, Marco almost died in the snowstorm, but he was rescued by local monks. Their next steps lead them across the Gobi desert, where they finally met with the first Mongols, the servants of the mighty Khan Kublai.

Another day we sail into the blind Another day without my cherished by my side So far away from all I've ever known And so alone I dream of home ... We seek the land of opportunity We'll carry on and on as far as eyes can see And leave our world behind for a fortune we must find (Chorus) We're sailing away Following stars that guide our way Toward the horizons and beyond Into a brand-new day And when I close my eyes I see the flame that never dies And in my dreams my one desire Is setting my heart on fire We made our allies and our enemies We always try to be the best that we can be Never have I longed before to return forevermore (repeat Chorus) Another day the rain falls endlessly Another day to find a reason to be free So far away from all I've ever known And so alone I dream of home ... At first, Khan Kublai did not want to hear about letting his faithful servants go. But when his days were close to the end, he had a change of heart, so Marco and his old father and uncle aimed for their last journey – the journey back home.

All aboard Six hundred courtiers and sailors in tow Protect the princess And our freedom is ours to show Under skies so blue We head back to the shores we knew (Chorus) I chased the stars And I've travelled Fifteen Thousand miles Or more We turn around Our fortune we've found This final voyage Will bring us all Back home Twenty years have passed us by Like a lifetime Through my tears I see a light In the distance grow A familiar land Emerges into view at last (repeat Chorus) They travelled around the whole world, but just before the end of their journey, they were arrested in Genova, where Marco had to explain his adventures for which his contemporaries were not yet ready at this time. Instead of a great welcome he became a prisoner.

Once I've left my home To wander all my life And search new worlds All the dangers From the journey I have passed With just one hope To unite the different worlds And cultures to let people see All the wealth of whole mankind Just follow me (Chorus) Dreams don't leave me now Across the far horizon To distant worlds a Again I'll come There I left my heart Thousands miles away From where I'm now To my new home I will return Truth and cruelty Honor and inherent dignity In the foreign lands I've seen It's all the same for every man I've been serving to my Khan And all his wisdom I have seen (He) took me in and led me like his son Let me be clear (repeat Chorus)

After his vindication, Marco finally, after half of his life, returned to his home, Venice. He lived there for many more years enjoying the wealth he had brought home from his journey. But he never forgot about his second home far east. Everything he had seen remained in his heart forever. He longed to return to China, but it never happened.
