Death and the Twilight Hours
Behold the season's blood-dimmed turning As all faith falls to gloom Witness the bright star put to end With darkling hand life undone By grievous death peasant and king hewn by iron spear With sudden sword, woe betide Deny him not for his pity lost The king of terror rides down All faith and hope be gone Come from black fire in fearsome form He rides through brimstone sky Called from hell by celestial choir, the scorn of beasts The judging hour, of visions sight, draweth nigh Born of the thundering funeral planes He hath risen from starless night On descending fire with sword and arrow He comes to extinguish all creatures of the light Through darkness and silence gasped the judge has come The martyred saints thus wakened in their tombs Ruin wrought from seven open seals Fraught with demon terror, the devil, Triumphant, sings of certain doom Extinguish not the spirit, despise not the prophet's sign For the angel of death is no mere illusion of sleep With sudden sword, woe betide Deny him not for his pity lost The king of terror rides down All faith and hope be gone The earth, a tower fell, lies thick with death Battlements alight on the nightfell ground A skull thrust in the face of man, the devil sings A graveward march led by beating drum

The church in ruins, burns by autumn flame Sickness and plague have come! Brought of human sin Hastened to death by fire, the spirits slain Heaven has fallen to night and death's demon arrows fly Foolish the prophet's folly, he burns by autumn flame Thus spoke Vitalis, the plague brought of human sin With avenging sword begin thy doom Darken the light from the stars and moon The skies weep in torrents of blood Wracked with sacred fires and so adjudged Fear all! The plague has come, the hand of glory For whom all silent truths must tell The devil shall inherit the earth Plunged into darkness, oh despair! The dead, they lie in groundless graves Assailed by fevers, pray Left to ruin and claimed by death The church in ruins, burns by autumn flame Sickness and plague have come! Brought of human sin Heaven has fallen to night and the devil shall inherit the earth

Listen! Hear the funeral toll To bring swift life's ending knell It calls! Ruined body to earth swallowed The bells, they ring a twilight song And Death, he waits there Wherein dawns the clear light To quiet the darker shadows Of slinking devils and lower beasts Come and see! Earth's kingdom shattered Come! The end is near Come and see! Life's glory sundered Come! The end is here Gathered in slumber, the spirits sealed Pale skulls In light's fleeting glimmer Benighted, sallow vile, naked of skin and bone Exalted, in fallow fires crowned Bellow! Pale as death, naked as sin Infernal herald, see deaths ruin done By ebbing sun and blood red earth The kingdom of death has come Come and see! Earth's kingdom shattered Come! The end is near Come and see! Life's glory sundered Come! The end is here

What is this that appears before me? At this nocturnal hour, lost of lingered prayer Who's there? Come forth to take me Mournful creatures of the dark appear! Wake, for the devil holds fast your eyes His unnatural gaze steals upon thy spirit And the keys of unveiling are shown Demon sights of the twilight sleep- And the keys of unveiling are shown Yes the dreadful work is done And the keys of unveiling are shown Faith shall not vanquish death, so be still For every man is free to die, under my will The sky will crack, and earth shall quake The devil from slumber shall surely wake So cast off your cerements and dance Lo! My pact is binding, to receive body and blood Terrible king am I Hail horrors! Head bowed to bestial gods Hail the infernal world, thy kingdom come Hail death! His eminence of flies and bone Receive thy new possessor Yes the dreadful work is done Hear ye! Cast away false sleep and peasant dreams Through the pale door, from under churchyard stones Driven of spirit into the wilderness And death, he calls you home Thy kingdom come
