Divergence
Every day / we endure the stirring / of chaos Grappling with / our speculative knowledge I’ve acquired / a drive to stop / some of the suffering An obligation / to embrace compassion Chorus With one foot on the gas / the other on the brake ‘Cause we don’t have / a horse in this race We’re confined to a life / filled with misery But our morals are not dependent / on a deity All my life / I’ve been searching for answers / now I’m just following The hidden wisdom / of wolves and serpents And I’m too tired / for spiritual wandering / it seems fruitless So I’ll just rely / on practical wisdom / and some natural law With constant wars / from a lack of sympathy, and kindness We’re better off / skeptical and Godless

Surrendered ambition / to machines, and police, and conveniences The automation / of social condition Misguided commitments / where engagement’s rewarded with dopamine And isolation / is the repercussion Chorus: Nullify / the sweeping metropolis Colorless dreams / in perpetual night Repossess / the relationship to our Natural world / the ‘blue-earth spring’ Remember the valleys / the forests and cascading streams A recognition / of our sacred terrain Reclaim admiration / for flowers, and songbirds, and fields Re-consecration / of divine surroundings Compliance and fear And Talos is laughing But the mountain calls To revive our grace

Monoliths / prisons and borders Refineries / rifles and landlords Industries / towers and oil spills Free markets / like factory farms Chorus: Intrinsic imbalance / majority rule of the privileged class And rhetoric / of liberty by conformists With autonomy / direct action and consensus We can learn / to coexist without submission Monetized / asphalt and medicine Profiting / police and chemicals Divided / engines and smokestacks Conquering / with militaries Unable to stomach / another day in the machine A wrench is placed in the gears / to halt production A businessman joins hands / with a teenage anarchist To divorce the cycle / of class and race division Harbored by routine / and a fixed status quo We forget what we are / and dismiss what we know Blinded by the lies / and seduced by it all Where one flower blooms / more will follow

Chorus: Returning to hallowed grounds / of red sands and granite spires Retreat to the canyon walls / carved by ancient tears and time The river fades and then returns / like embers in a dying fire Echos of paternal wisdom / through the whispers of dragonflies Our wandering footsteps consume the path Uncovering stories written by ghosts from the past Scenery constantly changing as distances soar And the cave provides some shelter during the storm A thousand scorched trees are now fossilized Like sunbleached bones that stand up on a hillside Shadows expand as the light fades and darkness ensues And it is quiet here under the landscape of the moon

A punk legend and mentor / and you let us in While the warehouse walls / were covered in beer and sweat I still see your eyes in the night sky / unmistaken for stars This loss marks the end / of innocent times An indigenous activist / a teacher and guide A piercing smile / tattooed in our minds Futures robbed in a flash / but we can still see The painted reminders / of a grand legacy Chorus: I’m wishing for answers / that I’ll never receive The only comfort / is hoping that you found some peace I catch myself gazing / and pondering What you’d think, as I remember, and give honor to, our fallen kings and queens A pillar still setting its mold / with knowledge unlocked And nourishing us / with vinyl, and barley, and burdock A humble fuse / no longer burns in this world But keeps glowing bright green / in memories unfurled

A blurring distinction between pastime and obsession Mismatched expectations and a sacrifice of normalcy There’s no light in this tunnel / and the money’s almost spent Success is rarely measured / with personal content They consume and then discourage / all creativity Our instincts are maligned / and we’re forced to swim upstream A cognitive bolstering confirms the inclination That we’ve embarked on an enduring fool’s errand Spent twenty years scratching a self-destructive itch Traded jobs for tours that did not break even Gotta find my sanity so keep your eyes peeled But all I’ve found are empty bottles and broken hearts / so there’s nothing left to lose I’ve doubled down on many a thankless pursuit but my work’s been deemed ‘non-essential’ I crave validation But the best songs occur when we’re tortured / and there’s nothing left to lose

A critical juncture / of cause and effect For possible futures / with no promises kept An individualized / tailored reality Entangle our narratives / and fractured psyche An emerging array / of exponential gollums No guard rails in place / to afford any solace Informational marathon / a selfish arms race Released and propelled / at a frantic pace Impending, grim trajectory An abstraction / from our symbolic world Personified fabrications Ungovernable / spell of influence Heed the final warnings A divergence / from repeating patterns Merge our collective wisdom To dismantle / the imbalance of power And level the tilted playing field!

Us, and them And after all, we're only ordinary men Me, and you God only knows it's not what we would choose to do "Forward!" he cried from the rear And the front rank died The general sat, and the lines on the map Moved from side to side Black and blue And who knows which is which, and who is who? Up and down And in the end, it's only round and round, and round "Haven't you heard it's a battle of words?" The poster bearer cried "Listen, son," said the man with the gun "There's room for you inside" "I mean, they're gonna kill ya So like, if you give 'em a quick sh… short, sharp, shock They don't do it again Dig it? I mean, he got off light 'Cause I could've given him a thrashin' I only hit him once! It's only a difference in right and wrong, innit? I mean good manners don't cost nothin', do they, eh?" Down and out It can't be helped, but there's a lot of it about With, without And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about? Out of the way, It's a busy day I've got things on my mind For want of the price of tea and a slice The old man died
