Artillery barrage In the dead of night We arise from our trenches The storm of steel Arcs above Cascading across the skies Deafening sound of the howitzers Belch forth covering fire A wretched inferno of heavy iron Pireces through the black Rushing from center to cover Toward the enemy stronghold Through the fields of wire and mines A curtain of protection Companies of the fierce elite Plunge into nothingness A hail of steel eclipses the horizon Concealing our advance Feuerwalze Death from the skies Showers of hellfire Oppressive bombardment Perish in flames Artillery barrage In the dead of night Scorching the Earth A caustic veil of smoke Pours over the land A surreal nightmare of burning fields And torrents of noxious flames Twisted husks of charred remains Motionless upon defiled landscapes Trudging through the entrails Flooding the defensive lines Shielded by cannon fire The objective is complete Total war, total destruction Nothing left remains Except the glowing embers Illuminating the path to victory Feuerwalze

Weeks turn to months And the months turn to years Endless, incessant Infinite fear A witness to The cadavers decay Unburned, putrid Lifeless and grey Turning to dust Before my eyes Insects, bats Maggots and flies Bullet filled remains In midsummer heat The nauseating stench Of utter defeat Endless Ceaseless On and on and on and on Forever Eternal attrition Trapped in a claustrophobic dream The only reality, war Memories unclear Existence is warped Enduring the sleepless nights Eagerly awaiting the next attack Preparing myself for death The shroud of war All consuming The thrill of combat And accustomed abyss Of perpetual battle The spiritual pull To endure the unknown With nerves made of steel Numb to the pain Over the top I go again Enthralled with the thoughts Of endless war The longing to remain Forever more Endless war Eternal attrition

The night closes in Darkness reigns again Constant bombardment For weeks at a time The horror descends Upon my mind Only so much one can take Until the psyche starts to break Appalling conditions Riddled with lice The dugout flooded And plagued with mice Artillery barrage Drones on and on Monotonous terror Lasts until dawn The haunting visions And deafening screams Echo down corridors As conscious dreams The ghosts of war Visit at night Apparitions of Pale white Festering wounds That can never be cured Delusional, delirious Sanity forever obscured ...and the night closes in again Awaiting morning With a lifeless stare The only light From the enemy flare Hallucinations Deceiving my eyes Silhouettes vanish And materialize Whispers penetrate Through the breeze Paranoia consuming Relentless unease Faceless figures Arose from the black True terror of the night is a knife in the back ...and the night closes in again
