Closet Door in the Room Where She Died
Face in bathroom mirror is not mine Someone else is looking out Someone else is looking in Medicine cabinet medicine for my troubled head Close the door Close Before the scratching begins Clock downstairs chime and chime One room lit this night of time One house awake on silent street Bathroom mirror watches me As I wander as I walk From room to room following sounds That no one else would hear if they ever came to visit Shadows peer from around the corners Peer at medicine drop down drain But it will be our secret Yes it will The Secret of the Missing Pill I am a child again Lying awake in bed across from the Bad Room Hear the sounds Become the nightmares And the solace of hell scratches behind closet door Picture hanging like Woman hanging From a light fixture that never worked anyway Bad wiring maybe I really should repair it Her painting of madness and the demons that know me Invoked in oils Peering around corners And fixing their gaze on me It hangs there still, in the bedroom across from mine I recognize their faces, the eyes in the mirror I think they belong to the things in the closet The things I am slowly beginning to see clearer Every day seems a little longer than the last Every sunrise I am sleeping less and less And the sounds whisper thick about me The door is closed, the clock is chiming I think it really is the timing It hasn't stopped in all these painted years I reach out for the closet door The room is dark But the light never worked Reach out my hand and the doorknob is hot but icy Closet open, swallows me whole Just like the grave that was squared in my soul Now I am here, now I am there Now I breathe deeply, the ghost of the square This house is alive, the whispers were true I look out of the bathroom mirror at you
