The Great White Nothing
Three gravestones for my brothers Three years in hell, my brothers We leave for the white wasteland, my brothers The endless march in silence Under strange, glowing skies We pray for the sun to rise When is the day of reckoning? I can’t meet my maker like this If only blood could run through frozen veins, Oh Lord Where is your honour as you left me with them... here... in the great white nothing Under strange, glowing skies We pray for the sun to rise

Frail bodies shudder Raw bloodmouths wail The plane in midnight sun Frozen dead and pale What songs will they write for us? Will they know what we did here? Our crimes against God in the North Frontier Jaws clenched in hunger All my brothers fall My cries go unheard Unread, my scrawl

As they crowd around me I plead for a way out Stay your hands! Cast me into the wild To the winds, to the Gods! Man is born into trouble Born to bludgeon, to purge Thrown Onto the soil you were supposed to protect broken pact, bones No law No court is fit for cowards like you We handle this ourselves We handle this ourselves Decimate the threat in our ranks Our pact built on honour and fear Man is born into trouble Born to bludgeon, to purge

Crawl from the breaker the breaker Where the road ends they built not the gallows nor the pyre But the wooden stakes and heavy wheel that break bones and spirit Join me in prayer Assist me in a plea to heaven Crawl from the breaker the breaker I beg of you, God Don’t leave me Lamb of God Have mercy upon me Bring down the axe Let the blade fall Head off Head off

I taste the salt in the air I hear scythes on the wind Old scars burn again Let the river wash them clean I grasp at the silent air the last of a dying breed for my broken soul allow a resting place Below the lights Away

Claw my way out of mangled steel Those left now screaming under burning wheel Flesh and friction on a canvas with no end A pale face passes with a blackened stare “Don’t bring hope if you’ve got any left” I turn around to face the sky My veins spill open Flowing like sieves You won’t recover Through the coal black smoke burns a rising sun on a day of pain

Courage fails me now Why do they stare up at the sky? Arms wide like Christ in the field nearby I should be back in the dug-out not inside the third wave Lights crashing down Mortars cutting down the brave Calling third wave Our bayonets flashing Headlong on the move Thinking home, teeth gnashing Forward Pushing the waves Lashing our backs Bleeding the fields Blood Blood drop Pushing the waves Lashing our backs Bleeding the fields

Our men left our lands as the dawn broke with their weapons with their strength with great hope Our sons left our lands as the sun was setting with their weapons with their strength with great fear Their sons came to our lands as the moon rose wiSth their weapons with their strength with blazing fury We are alone in the black night We are alone in the fire Burning with hate Shaking with fear All lost We are alone in the fire
