Ann - Chapter 3: Anne Frank
The water softly glistens, reflects the carmine sky While I stroll and savour this day, another year gone by These sweets and flowers, have thoroughly spoiled me But none so grand as you my dear diary, my friend To you I'll pour my heart out, confide my deepest thoughts I'm quirky but I'm honest and fair We'll share both tears and laughs Dear diary, you should know we live in dangerous times I'm german-born, but Jewish and therefore disgraced In the arms of Amsterdam we found shelter from the unknown Whether earth or human-born, there's a harbour for every storm In the heart of Amsterdam we have found ourselves a home She has cradled us and shown there is love for whom her bells toll De Duitsers zijn nu ook in Nederland aangekomen En met hen ook de Jodenvervolging Mijn geliefde Amsterdam is niet meer zo veilig als voorheen Er volgt Jodenwet op Jodenwet Joden mogen niet meer in de tram Joden mogen enkel tussen drie uur en vijf uur winkelen in Joodse winkels Joden dienen na acht uur's avonds thuis te zijn en moeten te allen tijde een Jodenster dragen In the arms of Amsterdam we found shelter from the unknown But the menacing storm has brought the darkest of foes In the heart of Amsterdam, where we found ourselves a home We await what is to come while the bells of Amsterdam toll

Be still my beating heart, all is quiet, fear no more We've made it safe and sound to the annex, our new home Once that letter came and it spelled my sister's name We fled our dismal fate, leaving us Scorned, lost and torn in a gruesome tale of woe Abandoned and forlorn, silenced and alone Sentenced to confinement, forced to hide away Why do I complain, am I plagued by memories? I can't feel at ease while so many lives are lost All those friends we left in this hope-forsaken war Will we meet again? Or will they be Scorned, lost, torn Scorned, lost and torn in a gruesome tale of woe Abandoned and forlorn, silenced and alone Sentenced to starvation, forced to fade away We ziin hier met z'n achten, in het achterhius: De familie Frank (onze familie), de familie van Daan En Menner Dussel, de tandarts Alle relaties staan biizonder op scherp maar We moeten het met elkaar zien te redden Hier in onze eigen kleine werld The morning begins, before the warehouse awakes, at the break of day In silence we eat our meals, we study and pray, then chores await At one we hear the BBC Radio say, no good news today The hours fade, by ten we're all tucked away, goodnight But then the horrid hellfire rains down upon us Bombs fall, shooting strengthens Lord hear your subjects! Safe in his arms (Flee to father and cry in his arms) This war with so many dead (This war, this torment and so many) Scorned, lost and torn in a gruesome tale of woe Abandoned and forlorn, silenced and alone Sentenced to confinement, forced to hide away De mens heeft diep in zich een drang tot vernielen Een drang tot doodslaan, tot vermoorden en razend zijn En zolang de gehele mensheid, zonder uitzondering Geen grote metamorfose heeft ondergaan Zal de oorlog woeden, zal alles is opgebouwd Aangekweekt en gegroeid is Vernietigd worden

De geallieerden zijn aan wal gekomen Het is zes juni negentien vierenveertig en het bericht vanuit Normandie brengt ons in jubelende stemming We zitten gezamenlijk om de radio heen Om de geheime BBC-uitzending te horen En wat een nieuws bracht hij ons: het is D-day vandaag This news, so long awaited, occupies my mind From the turmoil inside, to the dreams that ignite I praise the unknown soldiers who laid down their lives Through their eyes, I see Normandy arise At break of day, white-crested waves, carried the brave ashore While cannons roared and strangers fought, on this day June sixth, forty-four These days, so bleak and bare, are brightened by belief That I'll soon feel the breeze, walk the cities' streets But hear me, within hope an enemy resides, one that feeds And lay siege, on a dream within my reach A new dawn is near, shatter these chains Begone dire warfare, let me be embraced By a new world in which I'm welcome and safe When everything crumbles, let my words remain This war with sorrow laden, has rooted viciously Into my bone and marrow, the ardent life of me And while its darkest tendrils smother me silently I pray oh bravest soldiers, make haste the time is nigh Gisterenavond voor het slapen gaan zag ik ineens mijn vriendin Lies voor oggen Ze was sterk vermagerd, in lompen gekleed, en met grote, droevige ogen zeek ze Me verwijtend aan, oh lies! Kon ik je maar helpen Tijdens onze vriendschap was ik nog veel te veel kind, maar je zou me nu eens moeten kennen Niemand hier ziet het maar ik ben gegroeid en volwassen geworden Ik heb dromen en ideeen en ik wacht op de dag dat ze uitkomen Oh amidst this gruesome war I lay my words to dry I travel through the lines and my inner bird takes flight Roams wild and free, sings her song in spite of war I write to you, dear diary, on this day August first, forty-four A new dawn is near, shatter these chains Begone dire warfare, let me be embraced By a new world in which I'm welcome and safe When everything crumbles, let my words remain Mijn liefste wens is dat ik later een beroemde schrijfster mag worden Na de oorlog wil ik een boek getiteld 'Het Achterhuis' uitgeven Of dat lukt blijft nog de vraag, maar mijn dagboek is een goed begin
