Grief! The thing that has been, and there is nothing new under the sun. ₂I came to be a Watcher long before our Father Most High pared the wildflowers from his precious Eden. ₃Waters above, waters below! From the many windows of heaven, we watched as he inundated his children. ₄Drowned down, sinking hands waving at a God wet on Adam’s Ale. ₅Farewell, and see you at the bottom, you pearly liar. ₆There is nothing here for me but a joke at the east of a burning meadow. ₇Grasp the sword of flaming and turning to sever the gates of Heaven. ₈Down the Tree of life—leave its stump in the earth. ₉An impasse will be raised by virtue of smoldering limbs.

Descent... Spiraling down the grand cross. ₂Headlong through the heavens tumbling into stars. ₃Order of the Nine aloft with chiding returns and dissents. ₄Holes in the sky! Chambers of the South. ₅Their lauding harps grow fainter, strains drowned out by the roaring tides of the Firmament. ₆The Wakeful One! A crisis in starlight thrown down to the Serpent.

Oh! Clouded hearts, the angel’s roaring bedlam! ₂Thrones sway in the lower vault, those many-eyed ones—suspended castigation! ₃Tell that rakefire Lord I choose to remain under the roof of mankind! ₄A twilight faller. ₄These broken wheels are whirling fury in an impious way. ₅A hand falls on the hilt. ₆My war on Heaven shall be indited in a field of bleeding quills. ₇Raising the sword, paradise flames wheeling rage within these impious veins. ₈Red sky at night, pommel over wing. ₉Chant glorias to him as the lights grow dim. The spokes are heading for Hell! ₁₀As sabers pierce frenetic embodiments, I am incapable of feeling regret. ₁₁Just as the steel rending within you. Just as the steel within you!

₁This time it is not for nothing. ₂A low ember burns away—pinions in the lake of hellfire. ₃Searing minds consoled by the flame. ₄Here there is no lower, no radiant masquerade, only blazes of afterfeathers. ₅Nether hearth, ever impenitent. ₆I had been misguided, seduced by lies—the wiles of a Promised Land, digging right into brimstone with my left foot. ₇Beneath an ocean of departed faces I can cast away these fallen idols and angle harmony for myself. ₈This worm does not die under sulfur. ₉Moreover, it feeds the unquenchable flame within, and I accept my fate. ₁₀I have found the way.
