The Weight of Eternity
Wither has gone the sun? Where are the stars to light my way? These winds cry a mournful tale Speaking of unutterable loss Blight has fallen upon these lands And I am a failed god In this kingdom of dust and ash With heavy heart I walk Amidst a throng of broken memories Thought has quenched the light And I carve my grief in every stone In every dead tree Whence has come this sickness? Where is the flame that burned so bright? A grave for every hope that died A name for each star that fell Only tragedy begets greatness And this world runs deep with despair But there are none with whom to suffer it Only these monuments remain And I, bearing the weight of eternity

We questioned the gods And the hollow earth alike And found not in the faces of men Nor in the spirits of beasts Not in the passing of restless waves Nor the narrative of the soul A place to call our own Here on the sepulchral foothills At the end of the world That seemed to us plagued and diseased Here we found our tired feet had taken us Into the coldest night Away from the wretched creed of man Under a sunless sky Adrift in the ecstasies of apocalyptic euphoria On the heights of despair Here we came to bear witness To the graves of our failed gods We crawl under the rubble And dig up the bodies And find not in the bones of our forebears Nor the ghosts of the past Not in omens that speak of things to come Nor the calling of great tragedy A place to escape from ourselves

Veil after veil is released from your soul Veil after veil swirls intangible in the air How many veils covered your soul, how many secrets have they buried? Why have you hidden your depths from light, from air, from surface? You told yourself: everything is extreme, unutterable And off you went taking the church bell, covering the windows And under darkened vaults built your temple Veils that covered secrets, and secrets that hid sadness The mystery of veiling is revealed unto us In the aerial dance of the veils, the mystery of all that is unutterable Veil after veil is lifted from the soul; Mysteries approach the world, the light, the air, and the surface How veiled were these mysteries, and each tombstone So many dead lay under them, so much sadness in you
