I remember the fog, a shimmering nebula Slowly washed in on the breeze At the center of town, she took her form And sweetly announced our convictions A disarming voice, lullaby sweet arose As if sung by the trees "Bountiful hunts, protection from danger I've given you for generations" Campfires sputtered and torches burnt out Tools now rusted were falling apart Buildings did groan as wood rotted away Some nights in my dream I can still hear her say "I have watched and protected you night after night Staved off your hungеr from famine and blight Your hunts were succеssful, your quarry was ripe You community flourished, your future was bright But you took and you took, you consumed to no end Acres of forests and rivers you've stemmed The pain you have caused you cannot comprehend You've broken my trust now your souls I will rend" I remember the dusk, kicked up from the chaos It eddied through moonlight beams Lost in confusion, I could not break free From the terror that held me in place Then an image of refuge lucid in mind Gave me hope through the burgeoning screams I dared now to run till I found my safe haven Within the roots of an oak tree's embrace Campfires smothered, their warmth given out Tools were useless and crumbled apart Buildings collapsed, their supports given way All these years later I still hear her say "I have watched and protected you night after night Staved off your hunger from famine and blight Your hunts were successful, your quarry was ripe You community flourished, your future was bright But you took and you took, you consumed to no end Acres of forests and rivers you've stemmed The pain you have caused you cannot comprehend You've broken my trust now your souls I will rend" Silence had fallen, daring to peek At the carnage that had been done I lifted my eyes but was stunned when I saw The shimmering standing before me A pathway had opened leading me out It glowed with the rising sun She told me to leave, but always remember This night amongst the trees "I have watched and protected you night after night Staved off your hunger from famine and blight Your hunts were successful, your quarry was ripe You community flourished, your future was bright But you took and you took, you consumed to no end Acres of forests and rivers you've stemmed The pain you have caused you cannot comprehend Now listen dear closely, your life will contend" "To the future you will bear this message I send Any soul that defies me will be forever condemned"
