Herds of the Fathomless Valleys
When your broken engine stalls on long deserted tracks, take a walk through the nameless town time blew off the map. I heard a rusted chime sing "how I longed for the open road and finding at the end my home." Hearth sinking into the earth, a fossil from a bone. Wondering how far its roots have spread and grown. I heard a far off whistle sing "on the open road, eternally my steel wheels roam." Been movin' from the day I was born. Been movin' from the day I was born. I heard my lonesome dog sing and I longed for the warmth of home standing on deserted tracks alone. Get movin' on my way to your door. Been movin' from the day I was born.

Sittin' on a cloud high over the lonesome Black Hills. They stretch into quiet to the hole that the Badlands fill. Sometimes it feels like nothing, other times so much more. Like when you dance upon the dust of the lonesome Badlands floor. When you drift across the sky of dyin' stars and new ones born. Sometimes it's burnin' heat beatin' Hell upon my face. Sometimes it's blowin' snow buryin' my path without a trace. Sittin' on a fence of twistin' and rusted razorwire. The morning bird was singing a song for the old day that expired. Driftin' down a dirtroad of dyin' days and new ones born. I will meet you there, the dust is where we all return. When you drift across the sky of dyin' stars and new ones born.

I'm just a wanderer to all who meet me, slip out the back door so discretely. "Lady luck never shined on me" the old man sighed. "I always walked under shades of midnight, dodging streetlights, livin in the shadows feels like home." "But sometimes I feel so far from home." I'm just a wanderer to all who meet me, slip out the back door so discretely, just rambling along. "But once I knew true love and for her heart I still long." "I once thought about heading back to the prairie, but this load on an old back is a bit too heavy to carry." I don't know but never tried. But I know I never learned to smile 'cus I never learned to cry. I was never grounded and it kept me from reaching for the sky. "So now I sit here with more than a handful of regrets, and the damn things won't leave my chest." "There's a tattoo for a lady, we'll call her Lisa Marie, and another from a friend who used to mean so much to me." "They all faded with time." "Those dirty street puddles I bathed myself in, never washed my hands clean of original sin." "Don't mean to burden you with this story, lord knows I'm no preacher, teacher, or suit and tie." "I don't know, but I never tried." "Without being grounded you can never reach..." the old man said as he disappeared into the night sky.
